JOB SUMMARY:                                                                       

Under general supervision or direction, counsels and prepares individual resident exercise programs; leads exercise program; and performs related work as required.  Work involves regular contact with residents.

 

 

ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS:                                                                                                                      

Interviews each resident enrolling in a supervised exercise program, determines general medical history and contacts residents' doctors; notes any special requirements or problems.

 

Tests each resident’s heartbeat and blood pressure, assesses strength, flexibility, coordination, balance and relaxation.  Prepares individual exercise prescriptions detailing exercise type, frequency, intensity and duration based on resident’s medical history and goals, including exercise programs for recovery from conditions such as heart and pulmonary disease, orthopedic problems and recent surgeries.

 

Provides floor leadership.

 

Maintains comprehensive records on each program participant.

 

Provides oversight and assistance to individuals and group exercises, conducts regular heartbeat and blood pressure checks; adjusts individual programs accordingly.

 

Regular attendance required.  All duties performed on-site for the Community.

Drives a vehicle to meetings, workshops and other job related responsibilities.

OPERATED:

 

Blood pressure kit, exercise equipment, computer, printer, copier, fax and telephone.

 

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is in a climate-controlled indoor building.

 

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in Kinesiology.  Considerable experience in exercise instruction or equivalent combination of education and experience which produces the following:

 

  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the job.
  • Knowledge of geriatric exercise programs.
  • Knowledge of blood pressure, heart rate, strength, aerobic capacity, body composition and flexibility testing procedures.
  • Knowledge of the proper use of various types of exercise equipment.
  • Knowledge of modern office equipment, practices, systems and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and speak before groups.
  • Ability to relate to the needs and concerns of senior citizens.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public and to deal with public relations problems courteously and tactfully.

 

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Ability to obtain a basic Red Cross First Aid Certificate.
  • Ability to obtain an American Heart Association CPR Certificate.

 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

                                               

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk, hear, see and use hands to finger, grasp, feel, lift and carry up to 20 lbs, and reach.  The employee is regularly required to sit for long periods of time (up to 7 hours) and use repetitive motion to operate a keyboard for long periods.  The employee is occasionally required to kneel, pull, push, stoop, carry up to 50 lbs. and lift up to 100 lbs.

   

 

 

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:                                                                                                                                  

 

While performing the duties of this job the employee reads, solves problems, uses his verbal and written communication skills, and able to handle frequent customer contact, interruptions, and multiple tasks.
