The Greenville News/greenvilleonline.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking a content chief to direct coverage on our core politics, government and growth & development beats.

The role would also assist the executive editor in overseeing the Spartanburg Herald-Journal and Anderson Independent Mail newsrooms.

Responsibilities of the position include being a primary editor for reporters covering the city of Greenville, Greenvlle County and South Carolina politics and government. The reporters are expected to be watchdogs; understand hot-button local issues and provide readers with real-time information and answers.

The successful candidate will be responsible for fostering enterprise stories that drive digital subscriptions as well as managing our breaking-news response when big news happens.

This salaried job is one of three newsroom content editors. The content chief also works with South Region strategists to ensure that audience initiatives are driving growth.

With over 500,000 residents, Greenville County is the largest county in SC. Over 70,000 people have moved to the city of Greenville in the last 10 years. The city has gained around six new households, every week, over the last 10 years.

With growth showing no signs of stopping, our area features a blend of longtime residents and new families. The content chief works with reporters with the ability to reach that wide audience with compelling stories on topics and issues that affect their daily lives.

We’re a newsroom that values excellence in journalism and work-life balance. And Greenville is a great place to find that balance. Upstate South Carolina is halfway between Atlanta and Charlotte. We’re three hours from the beach, less than an hour from the mountains. As the anchor of one of South Carolina’s largest and fastest growing metropolitan areas, Greenville offers a vibrant nightlife, a nationally recognized food scene and one of the most envied downtowns in the region.

The Content Chief will:

•Oversee a team of four reporters and one content coach who cover local and state politics, growth and development, affordable housing access and equity issues among other topics. This editor also helps direct coverage of big breaking news.

•Guide the team members in covering topics and issues most important to key audiences. Work with the other content strategists and Audience Team to adjust content direction as data dictates.

•Aggressively use data and consult with audience analysts to make sure content decisions focus on the needs of the target audiences:

•Work collaboratively with the executive editor, other editors and members of the design and Audience teams to ensure a steady flow of quality content to provide the right elements on the right platforms at the right time.

•Collaborate with the Audience Team to ensure the right mix of content to maximize user experiences each day.

•Monitor real-time metrics to develop a clear picture of audience needs.

Requirements:

•Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, marketing or related field preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.

•Media management experience.

•Proven proficiency in applying analytics to content strategy.

•Strong communication and collaboration skills.

•Exposure to deadline-driven environment.

•Exceptional planning and organizational skills.

•Social-media and SEO knowledge.

•Self-motivation and self-direction.

We are eager to learn more about you and how you fit this role. When you apply, don’t limit your upload to a resume; show us what you’ve done. To do so, put together a single document file that includes the following, in this order:

1. Your resume – one to two pages.

2. A cover letter that outlines how you would approach the job.

3. Examples of at least 3 significant stories you have edited with a short (1-2 paragraph) narrative about how you helped the writer develop the piece, obstacles encountered during the reporting and writing of the piece, and how you overcame them.
