Boston Energy Trading and Marketing provides asset management & optimization services to owners of generation and energy storage in North America, and wholesale energy to retail power & gas suppliers. Our proprietary traders cover competitive power markets including New England, Midwest and Western markets. BETM has been optimizing our customers’ generation assets for over 15 years. Our current organization has its roots in Citizens Power, dating back to 1989 when Citizens obtained the first FERC power marketing license and market-based-rate authorization. Mitsubishi’s Diamond Generating acquired BETM from NRG Energy in August 2018, and prior to 2014 BETM was known as Edison Mission Marketing and Trading. Mitsubishi's provides BETM with investment-grade credit support for BETM’s commercial activities.
Role Summary:
Boston Energy Trading and Marketing (“BETM”) is looking for a Senior Quantitative Analyst, Trading and Asset Valuation to join its Analytics team in support of trading, pricing and valuation analytical efforts for the energy trading and generation services business areas. The successful candidate will possess a strong quantitative, technical and data analytics background. The candidate must be adept at working independently as well as have strong collaborative capabilities across the IT, Trading and Risk teams. This position will report to the head of the Energy Trading and Analytics team and will be located in our Boston, MA office.
Responsibilities:
- Develop, use and maintain pricing & risk quantification models and reports for power & natural gas products, power congestion contracts, load positions, generation offtakes, energy storage, structured commodity transactions, and other derivatives in a systematic analytical framework including developing and utilizing option pricing and generation dispatch models
- Implement fundamental models (of supply and demand) for power & natural gas markets at regional and macro levels utilizing state-of-the-art demand forecasting and the latest infrastructure intelligence available. Markets of interest include all North American RTO power markets (PJM, CAISO, NYISO, MISO, SPP, ISO-NE, ERCOT, IESO, AESO) and all North American natural gas markets
- Enhance and maintain internal models of volatility and correlations for valuation of option-type products and spot price models and submissions to consensus market price data providers
- Assist in daily trading activities: PnL and Risk calculations, trade settlement and execution
- Work closely with IT on analytical systems & modeling improvement projects and developing and testing new system enhancements
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Math, Science required, or equivalent quantitative study. Graduate degree in Quantitative Finance, Econometrics, or similar filed is preferred
- Extensive experience with quantitative modeling in Python, R, MATLAB, or comparable programming environment using modern data structures, analysis and visualization tools (Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn, Highcharts, etc.) in production Windows and/or Linux environment
- Knowledge and experience using traditional and cloud-based database and storage systems both Relational SQL (SQL Server, Snowflake) and NoSQL (Azure Blob/Data Lake, MongoDB)
- Experience working in modern cloud-based environment utilizing DevOps framework tools (GIT, storage accounts, pipelines). Familiarity with Microsoft Azure tools is a plus
- Attention to detail, diligent, strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, curious, confident, and creative
- Ability to overcome ambiguity and achiee goals without knowing the steps involved to get there; ability to plan/manage multiple priorities while committed to deadlines in a demanding environment and work overtime when required
- Works well in an open office environment
- Three or more years of experience providing a quantitative analytical support in the financial sector environment and experience with power or natural gas markets is required
