Intern - Engineering - Water Administration - Temporary
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under direct supervision of the utility engineer, to perform engineering work in the evaluation, investigation, design, construction, inspection, oversight, and operations of City water and wastewater systems; and to apply engineering skills and knowledge to a variety of other utility engineering problems and plans.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Provide engineering and technical plans and designs of water and wastewater utility projects that meet City standards and expectations.
Coordinate with other City Departments in the review and approval of public utility improvements associated with developers and owners’ plats, site plans, and construction plans.
Review plans and specifications prior to project approval in order to ensure all deliverables align with organization requirements.
Develop or aid in the development of water distribution and wastewater collection engineering drawings, equipment/material specifications, and budgetary estimates.
Conduct special projects as assigned.
Aid in analyzing the need for system developments; summarizing technical recommendations and providing business case rationales.
Aid in communicating with developers and property owners the potential impact(s) of upcoming utility work projects.
Provide input in departmental budget preparation and budget control activities.
Drive to inspect construction projects.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
Principles and practices of water and wastewater systems.
Principles and practices of engineering.
Methods, materials, practices, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of water distribution/treatment and sewage collections/treatment systems.
Skill to:
Apply engineering principles to interpret engineering documents and technical engineering plans.
Read and interpret plans, blueprints, maps and schematics.
Use various drafting tools including, but not limited to AutoCAD and GIS software applications.
Operate office equipment including computer equipment.
Safely operate a motor vehicle.
Ability to:
Perform complex engineering computations.
Check, design, and prepare engineering plans and studies.
Analyze and prepare technical data and reports.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, and make presentations to Departmental staff.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.

Experience:
This is an entry level position.
Education/Training:
Coursework as part of a Bachelor’s degree in an engineering related field from a college or university accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET) is required.
License or Certificate:
A valid Texas Driver’s License; the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days, or a military waiver is required.
